Our work in Menai
In the 1940s, the Menai area was sparsely populated. At this time a Sunday School for the local children was held in the home of a Salvation Army family, named Saunders. They owned some acres of land on Billa Road, which is now the site of the Inaburra School.
It was many years later, in 1990, that the Menai Salvation Army officially started, under the leadership of Captains David and Jeanette Woodbury. The congregation first used the Illawong Community Centre as its place of worship until a purpose-built Salvation Army centre was opened in 1993 in Pilliga Place, Bangor, where it remains today.
The Salvation Army in Menai is led by Mark Soper and is a hive of activity, with programs running every day of the week including: Moneycare free financial counselling, a Coffee Spot ladies craft group, Mini-Music for pre-schoolers, playgroup and youth group. Low-cost clothing and household goods can be purchased at the Menai Salvos Store on the Old Illawarra Highway.
