Arts-Based Community Development (ABCD) is arts-centered activity that contributes to the sustained advancement of human dignity, health, and/or productivity within a community. These include arts-based activities that:
Asset-Based Community Development is effective in building thriving communities because it develops communities that are supported primarily from within by members, resources, and capacities for the present and future.
A great place to start on your journey to engaging communities through the arts is to look at resources within your own faith community and see where you can bridge the gap with capacities of the broader communities you wish to engage with.
Faith-Integrated Art (FIA) Programs facilitate activities that are infused with the values of the Christian faith like peace, love, justice, reconciliation, and redemption. There are many and varied ways in which to develop faith-integrated arts practice, you are only limited by your imagination, however FAI programs tend to allow for organic faith parways to form as artists and creatives explore life, faith and meaning together through their art.
There are multiple and important roles for artist. Corbit and Nix-Early in their research into using the arts to transform communities, identified three groups of artists who are co-missioners with God: Prophetic Artists, Celebrative Artists and Agape Artists. The following figure provides one way in which these artistic expressions may be mapped to The Salvation Army’s Mission Intentions.
