History of The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was originally founded in 1865 by William Booth, an ordained Methodist minister, whose mission was to reach out to the poverty-stricken people living in London's East End. The evangelical group Booth formed was dedicated to preaching the gospel, and, recognizing the interdependence of material, emotional and spiritual needs, was involved in the feeding and sheltering of the hungry and homeless.
