Most of our theology assumes that being an adult is the normal case for humans. However, this is a dangerous presupposition, when 100% of humans begin in infancy, but a much smaller proportion live to adulthood. Many of our practices in ministry and
mission are predicated on adult models, making concessions or adjustments for children.
With this strange methodology it is no wonder our churches are mostly full of adults. If the Gospel is for all, then such an imbalance requires urgent redress - not just from a programmatic, pragmatic or strategic angle, but from the core of our theology. Marcia Bunge, Lutheran scholar from Valparaiso University and a pioneer in the Child Theology movement, addresses these issues with robust academic critique and grounded practical insights.
This lecture will provide a unique opportunity for anyone involved in Christian mission and ministry to examine their theological assumptions about children and adults, and be open to the reforming Word and Spirit in our thinking & practice.
