Replicating an evidence-based peer-led parenting program in Australia
Tuesday, 10 December 2013, 12.00-2.00pm AEDT
High quality parenting programs are a proven way of intervening early to optimise children’s chances in life, and Empowering Parents Empowering Communities (EPEC) delivers a carefully structured program in an effective way. Based on the idea parents talk to other parents as a first choice when seeking information, and communication is more credible when presented by ‘someone like me’, EPEC is a community-based program training local parents to run parenting groups. Developed and evaluated by the UK Centre for Parent and Child Support, EPEC encompasses the best of current theoretical and practical knowledge. This program is now being provided across Tasmania and will soon be provided in other parts of Australia.
This webinar presented by ARACY's Early Years Chapter, will provide an overview of this program, including the experiences of replicating a successful model from inner urban London to urban and rural Tasmanian communities.
Presenters Cindy de Jong has been responsible for co-ordinating the implementation of the EPEC program within Tasmania over the last 2 years. Within this role she has also facilitated BAP courses and trained, supported and supervised Parent Facilitators. Cindy has three daughters and three grandchildren.
Alicia Fischer is a mother of 5 children who graduated as one of the first parent facilitators of the Being a Parent course in Australia in 2012. She lives on the Northwest coast of Tasmania and has now co-facilitated three BAP courses. This experience has also led to her making a number of presentations at forums, conferences and to funding bodies on her journey through the EPEC program (from parent participant to facilitator).
Paul Prichard works for the Centre for Community Child Health (CCCH), Royal Children’s Hospital, Vic. Paul is currently undertaking a PhD focusing on participants’ experiences of peer-led parenting education.
