Self Denial 2024
The Self Denial Appeal began in 1886 as The Salvation Army began to spread its mission around the world.
In 1894, in the appeal's eighth year, General William Booth wrote, "During this week, every good Salvationist will deny himself of some pleasant or necessary things, and devote the money saved to the extension of the Kingdom of God and the benefit of the suffering" (letter dated 15 October 1894, from The Salvation Army archives, United Kingdom and Ireland Territory).
Today, 130 years later, the call is the same to every Salvation Army territory around the world. Salvationists from all walks of life and with all levels of income accept the challenge of self-denial and generously choose to support The Salvation Army's mission of "[extending] the Kingdom of God and [benefiting] the suffering".
We invite you to join us on this journey of sacrifice and generosity for the sake of people in need of physical support and spiritual hope.
Thank You
Thank you for your continued support of the Self Denial Appeal. Your generosity of the 2023 appeal saw over $3 million raised across Australia. This great result means people's lives are being transformed through the love of Jesus and the work of The Salvation Army in low-income communities.
Self Denial 2024 'Love in action'
The theme for the Self Denial Appeal 2024 is ‘Love in action’ and is inspired by 1 John 3:16-18:
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions" (NIV).
'Love in action' sums up the Christian lifestyle — acting in love towards others because of the love God has for us. Throughout the Self Denial Appeal, we will be challenged to see we cannot separate our display of 'love in action' from generosity with our financial resources.
In addition to educating, the video series will challenge us to deny ourselves, stretch our faith, deepen our trust in God as provider and to give sacrificially for the benefit of others.
Each week, we will hear inspirational stories from Salvation Army programs close to home — in Tonga, Indonesia and the Philippines. The stories will demonstrate how Self Denial funds have previously been used to help families create thriving small businesses in the Philippines, rebuild their churches after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia, and provide holistic education to preschool children in Tonga.
This Self Denial Appeal, you're encouraged to take the time to reflect on how you can make a sacrificial commitment to display your love for God and others in action.
