Favourite Band Piece / Composer:
Divine Communion - Arthur Gullidge [GS1255]
Indeed one of the greatest pieces of music in the history of Salvation Army brass bands. It's sense of intimacy with God permeates the music, perhaps in a way that could only be inspired by the spectre of eternity that hung over Gullidge on the battlefields of New Guinea. Songs used most effectively are: "All there is of me, Lord"; "Sweet will of God"' and "Holy Spirit, faithful Guide".
Over the years, many Salvation Army congregations have been drawn intrinsically to the throne of God by the simple yet powerful message of self-surrender, closeness to God and the assurance of eternal guidance.
Resurgam - Eric Ball [FS302]
The opening theme is a setting of a passage from the Apocrypha: "But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace". This 'faith' motif recurs a number of times during the work and in contrast there occurs music charged with high emotion, sometimes harsh and discordant, in moods despairng, sorrowful, fearful. Finally the music achieves serentiy and closes with a very quiet statement of the opening tune. 'Resurgum' - 'I shall rise again'.
