A recent survey of our welfare clients has shown that on average, they had $125 a week to live on after paying for accommodation. We recently heard of one family who had to choose between either eating dinner or leaving the lights on in the evening, just to make ends meet. These aren't the only things our clients have to give up. Many aren't able to afford medical or dental treatment, prescriptions, or presents for friends and family. Things like a holiday, or savings in the bank for emergencies are almost unthinkable.
