Salvos Schools Queensland
Salvos Schools in Queensland aim to educate students about the work and mission of The Salvation Army and provide a safe space to discuss important social justice issues such as homelessness and poverty. We also help to build connections between schools and their local Salvation Army site, as well as provide avenues for volunteering and fundraising.

Beyond the Classroom
Beyond the Classroom (BTC) is an educational experience of the work and mission of The Salvation Army.
For secondary students, the program exposes students to the realities and complex issues surrounding homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, poverty and the impact it has on the community. For primary school students, the program focuses on some of the challenges people can face in life (such as having no home, or not feeling safe at home), how we can care for others and the importance of community.
Salvos Schools has a number of objectives for the Beyond the Classroom program:
• Break down the stigma and discrimination for those marginalised and vulnerable.
• Cultivate compassion and empower students to make a difference.
• Highlight what services are available in their local area.
• Enable students to experience personal growth.
Students will come away with an understanding of the work and mission of The Salvation Army.
Level: Year 4 – 12
Duration: 2 – 4 hours
Location: School’s local Salvation Army Centre or on campus
Please note that BTC programs can be held as face-to-face sessions or online.
ABCD – Economy in the Classroom
In this highly participatory simulation activity, the classroom becomes representative of society and income inequality in Australia. Each student follows the life and financial position of someone over a three-month period. Students consider the factors that influence an individual’s financial situation and ability to secure housing and everyday necessities. We conclude by exploring the impact of social support and how young people can contribute to a more equitable society.
Salvos Schools has a number of objectives for the ABCD program:
• Students come to understand the ways that the Salvation Army provides support people in hardship
• Students can respond to common experiences of wealth fluctuation with empathy
• Students understand how one’s wealth impacts their ability to recover when faced with social challenges
• Students understand the causes and consequences of poverty in Australia.
• Students know where to seek support for themselves and others experiencing hardship
• Students and schools are connected into their local Salvation Army
Level: Secondary (Years 8+)
Duration: 60 – 90 minutes

School Information Sessions
Information sessions provide an overview of the work the Salvos do in Australia, specifically highlighting what services are provided in the schools’ local area, as well as educates students on poverty in Australia and the impact that not having enough money to access the basic necessities of life has on people. Information sessions also aim to get to students thinking about how they might be able to help people experiencing hardship, even just in small ways.
