Aligned with the Australian curriculum, the programs also hope to inspire students to not just learn about the issues but to rise up, speak up and take action to help make a difference.

Homelessness City Tour
This workshop operates as both an indoor and outdoor educational experience. We invite students into our classroom within the Salvation Army’s historic 69 Bourke street building. Inside, we break down how and why people come to experience homelessness in Australia. During the outdoor tour component of the program, we walk along the city’s footpaths and explore sites of refuge and hear stories of lived experience. Students will have the chance to participate in engaging activities aimed at challenging stereotypes and offering pathways to combat social inequities.
This meaningful experiential learning program is designed to challenge preconceptions, increase knowledge, inspire empathy and provide a platform for social justice activation. The workshop is curriculum aligned and suits a range of learning units, including the Year 9 City Experience and the Vocational Major Personal Development Skills strand. This workshop can also be run for teachers, for school development or staff formation days.
Level: Secondary (Year 8+)
Location: Bourke St, Melbourne CBD
Attendees: 25 students per tour (two tours can be facilitated concurrently)
Duration: 120 minutes (alternative 90 minute option available upon request)

Poverty & Inequality
In this incursion, students explore experiences of poverty in Australia and consider the drivers of inequality. An interactive budgeting activity stimulates discussion about hardship and the cycle of poverty. Students learn about The Salvation Army’s work to interrupt this cycle and are encouraged to apply a justice lens and act compassionately.
Level: Secondary (Year 9 +)

ABCD – Economy in the classroom
In this highly participatory simulation activity, the classroom becomes representative of society and income inequality in Australia. Each student follows the life and financial position of someone over a three-month period. Students consider the factors that influence an individual’s financial situation and ability to secure housing and everyday necessities. We conclude by exploring the impact of social support and how young people can contribute to a more equitable society.
Level: Secondary (Years 10)

Attendees: 12 - 30 students

Community and Caring
This primary school program introduces the Salvation Army and encourages young people to recognise their social impact. Using a range of fun activities and videos, students explore the concept of ‘caring’ and the ways that children and young people can positively support their communities and contribute to social change.
Level: Primary (Grades 4-6)
Location: In school
Attendees: 25 - 50 students
Duration: 45 minutes
Cost: There is no fee incurred with this workshop.
