Celebrating 140 Years of Salvation Army social services in Australia – an Army raised to serve the world.
The ‘Prison Gate Brigade’ – an outreach to men on their release from prison was the first permanent social service of its kind anywhere in the world. It grew from the ministry of Salvation Army Major James Barker who began conducting chapel services in the Melbourne Gaol in 1883.
From there, Salvation Army social services expanded rapidly. Today, supporting those in need in Australia and around the world, continues as strongly and passionately as ever. Please join with us to explore and celebrate 140 years - and beyond - of Salvos social and spiritual service to our community.
