Introduction to Self Denial 2022

The Self Denial Appeal started in 1886 when General William Booth called Salvationists to give sacrificially and to deny themselves so that they could offer God’s love to a hurting world.

The Salvation Army is now active in more than 130 countries, and the Self Denial Appeal still operates in every territory. Whether living in wealth or poverty, Salvationists from all walks of life generously support the Army’s mission to share the Gospel and improve the lives of millions of people through the love of Jesus.

Self Denial Appeal 2022

The theme for the Self Denial Appeal 2022 is ‘The Ripple Effect’. It reminds us that small actions taken in Christ’s name can become big, life-transforming outcomes for the Kingdom of God.

Due to the impacts of Covid-19, instead of travelling around the globe visiting the current work of The Salvation Army, this year’s series features personal stories from Salvationists who have previously lived on the mission field.

Lieutenant–Colonel Winsome Mason, Majors Brenda and Nigel Luscombe, Majors Bruce and Cheryl Carpenter, along with Bryant and Pauline Richards reflect on their experiences in vulnerable communities and how God—through The Salvation Army—transformed lives.

We will be moved by stories about the many countries, and provinces within countries, that these people have ministered in. These countries are Myanmar, Pakistan, Fiji, Japan, Jamaica, Haiti, Tonga and Sri Lanka. We are offered an insight into leadership in this context as well as the spiritual impact. We will be mesmerised by the breadth of work that has been undertaken by these missionaries in development, micro finance, human trafficking, medical and emergency work.

Each week, we will see how God uses Salvation Army corps and programmes to have a ripple effect through communities for his glory.

Devotional

This year’s devotional series draws upon the Apostle Paul’s prayer in Ephesians.

Paul was encouraging the Ephesians to act boldly in faith and watch the unimaginable results come from the hand of God.

The six-week devotional series, written by Lieutenant-Colonel Graham Durston, will help you engage with the Scripture in relation to the weekly Self Denial videos. We encourage you to use this opportunity to see how God can use you to create a ripple effect of his love throughout the world.

Throughout the series we will reflect on the words of the Apostle Paul, who penned this prayer to the believers in Christ, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20, NLT).

Paul wanted the family of God to act upon the faith they had so recently received. He was imploring them to live out their faith and to await the universal impact of action in Christ name. While we give willingly, our focus will be how infinitely, exceedingly, abundantly and immeasurably God will provide a harvest in fields across our planet.

This year’s song comes from Jared Grant, a Christian songwriter and worship leader at Melbourne’s Stairway Church. All of the Glory reflects on the theme and Scripture of the series, reminding us how everything we have belongs to Jesus.
