At Streetlevel we have several groups that meet to do different things during the week, and I see the values of Streetlevel at work through our community through these groups.
They help empower community members with skills and confidence as well as giving some much needed structure to the lives of our community members. They promote independence, love, respect and continuity which not only help at a group level but also assist in our community members involvement in community whether or not they are sleeping rough.
I gained first hand experience with this as I led a group of guys on a fishing trip to Rose Bay back in September. This was a group of guys from different backgrounds, race, socio-economic areas and personalities. However they had the common interest of fishing and bonded through this experience, showing those traits of respect and love through the simple act of getting together around something they all enjoy.
This reflects favorably on what we're trying to do at Streetlevel. This trip was a great example of the values that run through our programs and it was the community members themselves who showed these values to me.
