Streetlevel - A Place of Connection

2 October 2019

Mitchell Evans

Many people in our nation are lonely and isolated. Even with the various forms of social media and wide variety of communication methods available today, too many people are suffering from social isolation and loneliness. Social isolation and loneliness has the potential to impact anyone and this is no different in our community.

Whilst this issue of social isolation and loneliness isn’t restricted to a certain demographic or age group, circumstances like mental illness, addiction (and recovery from addiction) and homelessness are just a few factors that can increase the likelihood of someone suffering with social isolation.

For many people Sydney Streetlevel Mission is a place of safety and refuge. Streetlevel is a place of refuge from the elements and gives many a place to “be”. We are also a place of acceptance no matter who walks through our doors – EVERYONE is welcome. Whether you are visiting us at our site in Waterloo or Surry Hills, the same heartbeat of acceptance and being welcome is available to every person that walks through our doors.

Our local response to this large issue of social isolation and loneliness is simple but continues to be so effective. We create safe opportunities for people to connect with others from their community. From our knitting group at Streetlevel Waterloo to coffee connect at Surry Hills, to art group, the ever growing cross word crew, Friday night church, walking group or our Community Connect lunch on Thursdays just to name a few, each of these ‘activities’ provides opportunity for connection – real connection where you are known and know others.

At Streetlevel we believe that we are all unique and designed to do life in community together. No one is meant to do life alone. We don’t see our uniqueness as something to separate and divide us but rather it creates an amazing strength and vibrancy that comes from being in real community.

As long as Streetlevel exists we will have an open door policy where everyone is welcome. Streetlevel will continue to build healthy community by creating space for people to get to know others and be known because we are better together.

My phone number is 0419 842 841 if you are available.

    Regards
